There are some restrictions on the candidates according to their category who want to appear for this exam. As general category candidate will only have 6 attempts and OBC category candidates have 9 attempts. SC/ST category candidates enjoy unlimited attempts set by the union public service commission. Some important points to be noted:

  • Candidates who are appearing for preliminary examination will consider being there first attempt and after prelims they will have to appear for mains in that year only.
  • If you fill up the form of the UPSC application form but do not go to write the Exam, then in that case your attempt will not be taken into account.
  • Even if a candidate’s candidature is disqualified or canceled, his/her taking the exam will be counted as one attempt.

Age Limit for SC, ST, OBC and General Candidates

Minimum age limit:

Candidates who want to appear for UPSC Exams must attain the age of 21 years. Any candidate less than 21 years of age will get rejected when the exam is held. So to appear for any competitive exam of Union public Service Commission you should be more than 21 years of age.

Maximum age limit:

Maximum age of the candidates is calculated from 1 August of any year. So candidate must attain the following upper age to get recruited or admitted to the vacant post:

  • General category candidates will get upper age relaxation of 32 years
  • OBC Category candidates will get relaxation of 35 years in upper age
  • Upper age limitation for the candidate belonging to SC/ST is 37 years
  • Candidates who had been domicile in the state of Jammu & Kashmir will get upper age relaxation of 37 years
  • Candidates of Defence Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof will get upper age relaxation of 35 years
  • Ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have served at least 5 years Military Service will get upper age relaxation of 37 years
  • Upper age limitation for blind, deaf, mute or orthopedically handicapped persons but belonging to the General category is 42 years.
  • Modification: Central government have recently issued a notice stating the relaxation in a number of attempts and age limits for UPSC Civil Service Exam
