Indian Administrative Service Exam:

Applicants hope you all well know that selection of the candidates will be based on –

Phase 1: Preliminary Examination or CSAT (Objective Section)

First stage is preliminary or Civil Services Aptitude Test only those contenders who are considered eligible will be eligible to appear for IAS preliminary Examination.

Phase 2: Main Examination (Subjective Section)

The second stage of recruitment is mains examination applicants who will qualify the prelims exam stage they can participate for mains examination.

Phase 3: Interview (Vocal Section)

Applicants who will qualify both written examination they will be called for interview round. Final selection of the candidates will be done after qualifying all three recruitment stages.

UPSC IAS Syllabus

IAS Prelims Syllabus:

This Exam includes 2 papers i.e. Paper 1 and Paper 2 for which complete syllabus is given here:

Paper 1 Paper 2
History of India and Indian national movement

General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization General Science.

Indian and world geography- Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.

Indian politics and governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.

Current events of national and international importance

Economic and social development Ecology- – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc


Logical reasoning and analytical ability

Interpersonal skills including communication skills

General mental ability

English language comprehension skills

Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. – Class X level).

IAS Mains Syllabus:

Main examination includes 2 paper i.e. paper A and paper B.

  • In paper A, there are 2 parts
  • In Paper B there is 7 parts.

Paper A

Part I:  Any Indian Language

In this examination you have to select one language that included in Eighth Schedule of Constitution.

This exam is not mandatory for applicants who are belong and living Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim States.

Part II: Indian Administrative Service syllabus for English

The motive of this paper is to examine the communication skills and understand serious discursive prose and check the ability express his/her thoughts properly in English and related Indian Language

Paper B

Part 1: Essay

IAS Preliminary Exam Pattern:

  • In preliminary Examination the questions will be of objective (MCQ) type.
  • The question paper will be presented both in English & Hindi language.
  • There will be negative marking 1/3 marks for every wrong answer

Marking Scheme for IAS Examination:

Applicants are also informed that there will be negative marking so be carefully attempt accordingly-

  • If applicants wrong answers for any question then 1/3 marks will be deducted as penalty.
  • More than one answer for exact question will lead to same penalty
  • If question is not attempted than any extra marks will not be reduced.
