What are the requirements for becoming IAS Officer?

Nationality:

  • a citizen of India, or
  • a subject of Nepal, or
  • a subject of Bhutan, or
  • a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
  • a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Age Limitation:

Candidates should have attained the age of 21 years on 1st August of the year of examination and not have attained 30 years. Candidates, who belong to SC/ST category, will be admissible for 5 year relaxation and OB Category will get 3 years relaxation. Civil servants working under the Government of India and Defense Services Personnel will be also admissible for age relaxation as per rules.

How to Become an IAS Officer

Educational Qualification:

Candidates, who are interested for the Indian Administrative Services, must possess a degree from an Indian University or Institution. Those, who ate in the final year of a degree course, are also eligible for IAS Preliminary Exam.

Easy Steps to Be an IAS Officer in India:

Step1:

The first step for becoming an IAS Officer is filling the online application form. It can be filed from official portal of Union Public Service Commission that is www.upsconline.nic.in. First candidates should read the complete notification.

Step 2:

After filling the application form, all eligible candidates will be called for IAS Examination, which is conducted in the month of May or June. Candidates have to qualify preliminary Examination with good score. Only those, who will be able to crack Civil Service Prelims, will be called for next process. Pre Exam will contain two papers such as General Knowledge and Comprehension and logical reasoning.

Step 3:

On the basis of score of Civil Services Preliminary Exam, selected candidates will be called for Main Examination. Main Exam contains paper like Essay type Indian Language Qualifying Paper, English Qualifying Paper, General Essay type paper, General Studies papers and Optional subjects papers. Candidates are required to crack this exam with good score.

Step 4:

Qualified candidates of Main Examination will be invited for Interview. Personality, Mental Ability and compatibility of the candidates will be tested on the basis of interview. Final merit will be prepared according to the marks of appliers in Main Examination and Interview.

Step 5:

Candidates, who will be selected, will be admitted in National Academy of Administration at Mussoorie. This academy is also famous as Lal Bahadur Sastri National Academy of Administration. Selected individuals will be given training in these academies. After completion of the training, candidates will be appointed in Central and State Governments as the IAS Officers.

IAS Prelims Exam:
